ATHLETES IN ACTION (AIA)
SUMMER SPORTS CAMPS 2012
“Kids learn pretty early that in the sports world there are winners and
losers. AIA figures that they should also know that they’re unique, valuable and
worthwhile apart from what they can or cannot do. They’re special because they
are known and loved by God.”
- AIA Summer Sports Camp pamphlet 2012

to learn key skills and techniques in basketball, volleyball, and dodge ball,
while at the same time encouraging the physical, spiritual, and emotional growth

basketball camp being held at St. Emile School from August 20 – 24th, 9:00 am –

Plant Orders
Plant orders can be picked up on Thursday, May 24th between 3:00 and 6:00
p.m. in the school gym. This is another place we could use volunteer help.
Love to work in the garden? Love the smell of clean earth and young growing
plants? If yes, then you’re the perfect candidate to come help and organize all
the orders beforehand. Give Suzanne a call in the office at 989-5020 if you can
lend a hand.

Volunteer Appreciation
Our annual St. Emile Volunteer Appreciation Day is Wednesday, May 23rd from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. We hope to see all of our volunteers there! The students and staff will have the chance to express our thanks for all the hard work, help and time put into the school no matter how big or small the task. We have always been able to count on our volunteers! We have chosen May 23rd as a special day to show our appreciation!
Who is a Volunteer? Any parent, guardian or community member who has come
out to the school and given up some precious time helping in some area of the
school. It could be in the classroom, in the canteen, a hot dog day, or
supervising students when staff needs extra help. Maybe you helped in the
library or on the school grounds. Put it this way, if you did it freely for the
school, then you’re a volunteer!!! Please mark the 23rd on your calendar as a
date you must not miss.
Come enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and some dainties while we (mostly the
students) entertain you!

your family is interested in participating, our school is registered on the
Marathon website. A letter was sent home with the online registration

number is 243. The registration deadline is May 29, 2012.
Please make any cheques payable to the school and complete and return the Online

Volunteer Opportunities:
The end of another school year is fast approaching and if you still need to complete your 4 hours per child of volunteer time or have the opportunity to share the gift of your time, we would love to have you join us in some of the following areas listed below. Don’t forget to sign in at the office and also to sign the volunteer binder so that your hours can be accounted for.
Canteen kitchen clean-up – In preparation of the Bike-a-Thon and Gr. 8 graduation, we will be meeting on May 7 at 9:00 a.m. to clean, sort, polish, and purge to ensure our canteen kitchen is ready to work for these large events. Because the canteen is used by many, items move from their homes, become damaged, or no longer are required. This is a perfect time to get things ship shape again. Come and stay after you drop the children off for school.
Bike-a-Thon – There are numerous volunteer opportunities at St. Vital Park on the day of the Bike-a-Thon. Please dress for the weather and report to the covered picnic shelters when you arrive with your child to check in. A volunteer coordinator will be there to greet you and morning creature comforts (coffee and tea) will be available. There is also a volunteer opportunity to help in the canteen the week of the Bike-a-Thon checking and packing our list of items that we transport from the school to the park.
Special thanks to Mrs. Sylvia Kozakewich for tracking all the incoming pledge monies and assisting with the draw entries! Which grade is going to get this year’s bragging rights and class pizza party for collecting the most pledge money??
Grade 8 Grad – If you are interested in assisting with transforming our school gym into a themed delight, please consider volunteering to help set-up for grad. Every year many hands help to make the gym a magical setting for the grade 8 students and their families. Set-up will occur on June 19th (dry run) and 20th (final preparations) for the ceremony and dinner reception on Thursday, June 21st.
We will also require some students and parents from this year’s grade 7 class to assist with dinner set up and kitchen help. Sign-up sheets will be posted at the end of May in the front hallway.
WE WANT YOU!! -Class Parent Rep
As the PA represents all parents/guardians of our school community, the Parents’ Association would like to achieve a balanced representation from all grades in the school. The older children have class reps that are involved in student council activities and the PA is looking for individual(s) that would be interested in providing feedback from a class/grade perspective as well as to be a conduit for increased flow of information and communication from items that are relevant to what the PA is and does.
Anyone interested in becoming a “Parent Rep”, please contact Elizabeth Hrycak @ 223-2339 or email ehrycak1@mymts.net and also provide the grade(s) you would be considering. Multi-grade class reps would also be considered.
Volunteer Positions for Next Year:
There is always a need for volunteers to chair or assist with our major fundraisers and committees. We are looking for individuals interested in the following positions:
PA Treasurer – our current treasurer will be graduating from St. Emile this
year as her daughter completes grade 8. There is an opportunity for mentoring
for anyone interested in committing to this executive position to ease any
transitional period.
Entertainment Coupon Books, St. Paul’s High School (SPHS) Raffle, Mom’s
Pantry, Hot Dog Day Coordinator, Grade 8 Christmas Raffle, Bud, Spud & Steak
Gr.8 Fundraiser, Plant Sale, and Bike-a-thon – Any one of these positions would
be wonderful for someone who wants to complete their volunteer time on one
commitment period or perhaps focus on one area you may prefer. Many of
these opportunities can be done at home or on a schedule that can be flexible
to you. Again, as with all of these opportunities, training and support is
available and “how to’’ step by step outlines have been created for ease of
running a successful fundraising campaign. Sign-up sheets will be posted in
the front entry hall.

Garden Talk...
We’re all itching to get into our gardens!
Are you ready to think about your garden? The plant orders have all been collected and now we wait for the delivery date of Thursday, May 24th.
For those who prefer to shop in person, you can purchase a plant card as they have no expiration date. These cards also make great gift cards for the person who loves to garden!
If you have not yet done your four hours of volunteering, this is a great opportunity. There will be a sign up sheet in the foyer is this is something you would like to do!

Love a Garage Sale? It’s time to clean the garage/basement!!!
With thoughts of spring cleaning, keep in mind that the Gr. 7 Garage Sale will take place on Saturday, May 5th. As we do not have space on school property to collect garage sale donations, please hang on to your items until the last week of April. May 1-5 are good days to deliver unwanted but clean items to the school.
We will not accept clothes or stuffed animals. Sally Ann would like these kind of items. Please be sure that all puzzle pieces are in the box, or game parts are all together or that electronic items have been tested and work before donating. Thank you in advance for checking this out.

You've Gotta Have Heart
Our sincerest heartfelt thanks to the St. Emile community during the Jump Rope for Heart campaign held in February. Through your generosity the pledges totaled $3343.00. All proceeds were forwarded to the regional Heart and Stroke Foundation office and students received their prizes the last week of school in March.
Run Club Updates: 2012 Season
The three Track and Field meets held at the Max Bell Centre have finished for the year and we wish to congratulate all the students who participated from Grades Four, Five, and Six. Students devoted two lunch recesses per week from January through March to practice the shuttle relay, the 4 x 200 m relay, team shot put, and team long jump. Our three student coaches, including Ayiya Ottogo, Mahekleen Gill, and Mackenzie Ratcliffe, shared their expertise during practices as well. We received ribbons from all the events and are currently collating them with the certificates before presenting them to students at an assembly.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the parents who came out and cheered us on. Special mention also goes to Mrs. Rose, Mrs. Besko, and Mrs. Navasca who transported students back to the school when our bus couldn’t wait for some of the events to finish. In addition, Mrs. Besko and Colby Rose volunteered during one of the meets to assist with the shot put and Mr. Fiorentino assisted in the bleachers. As well, we thank John Wichar, who assisted at the meets and will be back to help with our Marathon training practices.
All Run Club participants are invited to join the Grade Two and Three classes for the Manitoba Marathon’s “Jog in the Park” on Wed., April 25th. Students will be transported by bus to Assiniboine Park in the morning and will return by noon. Permission slips will be coming out later in the month.
Countdown 26 practices in preparation for the Manitoba Marathon will be held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (weather permitting) at 8:00 a.m. beginning Tues., April 9th. Parents are always welcome to run with their children. See you there!
Sincerely,
R. Querel and J. Weselowski

Welcome New Staff Members...
Welcome to Mrs. Jacky Boulet and Mr. John Holmes, two new members on our staff team!
Mrs. Jacky Boulet officially joined our Resource team as an educational assistant (EA) last month. Mrs. Boulet has been working part time as an EA at the school since late fall of 2011.
A former graduate of the Faculty of Human Ecology at the University of Manitoba, Mrs. Jacky Boulet also has an educational assistant diploma from the University of Winnipeg. Prior to working at St. Emile, Jacky was a substitute EA in over 10 schools in the Louis Riel School Division.
Mrs. Jacky Boulet, and her husband Real, have one child, Armand, in Grade One at St. Emile. Mrs. Boulet’s interests include: gardening, reality TV shows, and “everything Apple iPad”! Jacky eagerly shared the following impressions about working at St. Emile School: “From working here daily, it’s made me fall in love with St. Emile even more. I see firsthand how great the teachers and staff are, and how they genuinely care for each and every child! I also get to see how much more our students actually learn in comparison to the public schools I have worked in!”
Mr. John Holmes is officially the Grade Eight term position teacher until the end of this current school year. Mr. Holmes had been substituting off and on in the classroom since late fall of 2011. A University of Winnipeg Faculty of Education graduate, John is in his fifth year of teaching, having taught two years in grades’ 5-7 in Thailand and, more recently, teaching grades 7 and 8 in the Seven Oaks School Division in Winnipeg.
Mr. John Holmes, and his wife Ning, have a son named Phim, who attends Grade One at St. Emile. Mr. Holmes’ interests include: travelling, reading and music. John willingly shared these observations about teaching at St. Emile School: “I love that it’s such a close knit community. Compared to some other schools I’ve worked in, I have felt sincerely appreciated at St. Emile by students, parents and the staff. The students are easy to work with, cooperative, and have a good sense of humour!
We wish both Mrs. Jackyn Boulet and Mr. John Holmes all the very best working at St. Emile! We’re blessed to have them in our school community!!

The P.A. meetings are always posted on the monthly school calendar. This month, it is on Tuesday, March 13th. At 7:00 p.m. in the staff room. Parents are welcome to attend and find out what is happening with the P.A. and fundraising. There are some changes coming and you won't want to miss it! We'll be discussing the Plant Sale, Bike-a-thon and future fundraising ideas. If you want your ideas heard please come and join us. If you have any questions please call Lorraine at 256-8737. Coffee and goodies will be served.
We LOVE our Volunteers!
Volunteers are very much appreciated. Every year, we fill out our children’s registration for the coming year. The package contains a Volunteer Form that lists volunteering needs. Don't wait until next year to get involved with volunteering! Check in the office and Suzanne will direct you to one of the many areas that need volunteers or speak to any of the many parents that you see volunteering and they will fill you in. All we ask is 4 hour per child. This will fulfill your volunteering commitments. Often help needed for a onetime event (Shrove Tuesday, Learning Fair, kitchen renovation, field trips, vaccination day, etc) and only for an hour or two. So ask around and see what will fit with your schedule and get involved. Every parent who volunteers always enjoys themselves so come out and have some fun.
To keep track of your volunteering hours, please sign in the red binder in the school office.

We Are Moving the Bike-a-thon Back to May 18th.
We are pretty sure that there will be very little fear of flooding. So, the PA has decided to return the date to the Month of May. This is really a fun event if you have never attended. Try to take some time off and join us at St. Vital Park. You might even want to ride along with the children. We will feed everyone hot dogs afterwards. Try to remember to put this date on your calendar.

I Love to Read Month
During the month of February, every staff member, student, and school speakers read for fifteen minutes at 1:00 pm when Suzanne (secretary) sounded a weird silly sound over the intercom. There were many different guest speakers that came to talk to the grades 5-8 classes like David and Ryan who are champion badminton players who talked to us about how sports changed their lives. Another guest speaker was Angie, a holocaust survivor who helped Jewish people escape the concentration camps. Another person who came to talk to the classes was Nangie, a girl who lived in Africa during the Civil War. Every guest speaker who came was very inspiring to everyone.

Grade 5 Ski Trip Fun!
Our class recently went on a ski trip to Asessipi from February 8th - 10th. We left at 7:30am from the school and had a four hour bus ride to the ski lodge. All the students had a lesson and had a great time skiing and snowboarding all day, everyone agreed that the lunch was delicious!
After a long day at the hill we went back to the Hotel, where we settled in and had a very tasty dinner, after dinner the class swam in the pool.
Then we went back to our rooms for the night because it had been a long day!
The next morning we woke up and had a fresh breakfast! We then went straight to the hill and got our tubing passes, almost everyone in the class went down at the same time! It was fun and scarey at the same time, Everyone enjoyed it! We also had fun skiing and snowboarding that day. After that we went back to the hotel and had dinner and went swimming again. Well the guys were swimming the girls pranked the boys room! After swimming the hotel put on a special movie, marley and me! The boys got their payback on the girls by toilet papering they're room during the movie, it was an all out battle! We had sooo much fun together! All the kids were sad to leave the next morning at 8:00am because we had such a fun time! We were sooooooo lucky to have had the chance to do something that awesome! We hope that the grade 5's have a good time when they go next year!
We can't wait until our next trip!

“Ya gotta have heart, miles and miles and miles..”…
Candygrams are back! From Feb. 9th through Feb. 16th, the Grade Four class will be selling candygrams during recess breaks. These heart-shaped suckers cost 25 cents with proceeds going to Holy Childhood Association in sponsorship of our foster child, Debora Fadjebe. We thank you in advance for your support of this endeavour.
February is Heart Month and once again St. Emile will become actively involved in raising money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation through JUMP Rope for Heart for Grades K through Four and Hoops for Heart for Grades Five through Eight.
Canadian children today are at greater risk of heart disease and stroke than any previous generation of kids. Lack of physical activity is one of the key reasons obesity has tripled among Canadian children since 1981. By hosting JUMP and Hoops events, we can help our students develop the skills and equip them with the tools they need to lead a healthy life. Through skipping or playing basketball and fundraising for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, JUMP and Hoops teaches children the importance of healthy living and social responsibility.
The reality is that everyone knows someone who has been touched by heart or stroke problems. Twenty-five years of JUMP support has enabled the Heart and Stroke Foundation to fund vital research that continues to deliver medical advances, social change and health education right across the country. The youngest and only children will bring home the donation envelope and we again ask that you collect as a family throughout the first two weeks of February. Please encourage the children to ask relatives or others that the family knows well rather than collect door-to-door. Students will have the chance to earn cool, activity-focused thank-you prizes for their fundraising efforts.
JUMP Event Day is Tuesday, Feb 14th and Hoops event day is Wednesday, Feb. 15th . We would ask that the envelopes be submitted at that time. Prizes will be delivered to the school and distributed as soon as received after the event. We thank you in advance for your support of this endeavour.
Also….
“Take steps to reduce your sodium intake!”
Many families are not aware that they can cook quick, nutritious meals at home, and instead turn to store bought, processed meals, which are often high in sodium.
Our bodies need a certain amount of sodium (salt is made up of sodium) in order to stay healthy. However, most people get far more sodium than they need, which is a direct result of the processed foods that have become so commonplace. In fact, experts say that only about 10 per cent of our sodium intake comes from the salt we cook with and use during meals, and nearly 80 per cent comes from processed and restaurant foods . While taking the salt shaker off the table is a good start, it is also necessary to limit the amount of processed foods you eat.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba recommends that Canadians consume 2,300 mg or less of sodium per day, which is approximately one teaspoon of salt or less.
Ready-made lunch packages, processed meats, and fast food are high in sodium, and generally have little nutritional value.
“Many ready-made lunches are convenient, but not very nutritious,” says Christine Houde, Nutrition Manager at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. “It’s better to buy your own containers, and make your own lunches.”
Here are some ways you can reduce sodium in your diet:
· Try to choose sandwich meats that are lower in sodium. Salami, pepperoni and bologna tend to be high in sodium, so choose lower sodium alternatives whenever possible. Some examples are roast turkey, chicken or lean roast beef.
· Grill slices of boneless, skinless chicken once a week for sandwiches, pitas or tortillas.
· Try “batch cooking”, by doubling a recipe and freezing the leftovers for an easy meal later on.
· Make mealtime a family affair. If everyone pitches in, it will be easy, fun and a good way to teach kids healthy eating and bond as a family.
· Purchase pre-cut vegetables to save time.
· Use healthier fats, such as canola oil, herbs for flavouring instead of salt, add more fibre whenever possible and decrease the amount of sugar used in recipes.
· Include a regular thermos meal. Prepare extra food for dinner, and then put it in a thermos for tomorrow’s lunch. Try a low-sodium stir fry with lots of vegetables, or a low-sodium soup and crackers with unsalted tops.
· Choose healthy snacks to help keep energy levels up, such as fruits, vegetables with dip or a yogurt parfait.
Including too much sodium in your diet can eventually lead to high blood pressure, which puts you at a higher risk for heart disease or stroke.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Grade Two popcorn sale. The class raised $132.00! The girls and boys worked hard at filling bags, stapling, packing and selling the popcorn. It was a wonderful experience for the class to work together and in the end a feeling of pride to be able to help St. Emile’s foster child, Debora Fadjebe.
Thank you to Ms. Lemko, Mr. Haskiewicz, Mrs. James and Mrs. Kostis for their help and guidance.

COLDER WEATHER IS HERE!
The staff of St. Emile School would like to remind parents to make sure the children are dressed for these colder days of winter. The weather has been very cooperative and rather pleasant till now! However, sometimes the weather can change and the temperature drops suddenly. Winds pick up and make it unpleasant for little ones to be outdoors particularly if they are not well dressed. Please make sure everyone has warm mitts, ski pants, hats and boots. These items are called for no matter what the winter temperature.
Students will remain in school at recess time during inclement cold weather. If the wind chill factor reaches -27C, students will stay indoors.

A Message from Suzanne...
Thanks to everyone who has been bringing in used printer cartridges, Campbell Soup labels and drink tabs and drink cans. The school is still collecting all these items.
BUT…unfortunately, we are no longer collection the used printer cartridges. It was for a limited time only. We would like to take a moment to sincerely thank you for the time you take to collect these things for us as it has benefited the school immensely.
The drink tabs collected help to purchase wheelchairs for special students who cannot afford one. The Campbell Soup labels .
Many thanks to those of you who have been collecting all along and to the new families just coming on board with this.
Sincerely,
-Suzanne

STUDENT DROP OFF/PICK UP PARKING LOT PROCEDURE
The “safety first” procedure for dropping off and picking up of students is as follows:
All vehicles are to enter the parking lot off of Sterling Ave. (north entrance) and exit via St. Anne’s Rd. (east exit) only.
Also, when dropping off/picking up students, please do not park in the main thoroughfare as this causes traffic congestion. If you need to wait, please park your vehicle in the main parking lot area.
Also, always give way to the school bus! It is of utmost importance for safety reasons that this procedure be followed. Our appreciation to everyone who has been following this procedure!

Also, always give way to the school bus! It is of utmost importance for safety reasons that this procedure be followed. Our appreciation to everyone who has been following this procedure!

A small request from the Parents’ Association to all parents:
We are trying different and interesting meals for the students’ hot lunches. The children’s reaction so far has been positive. So we will keep searching for new and inviting food.
Here is where we could use your assistance. We will do our best to put in late order requests. We realize that some late orders cannot be avoided. Please make sure that the payment accompanies the order. When the food is delivered, we must pay the full amount. We, as a parent group, do not have funds readily available for IOUs and/or late payments. Please do your best to pay with your child’s order.
Thank you everyone for your help in this matter.

THE PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION would like to thank everyone for their support of our fundraisers over the last few months. There have been many people involved and without their enthusiasm, our children would not have the rich and varied education that they enjoy. Every parent who bought a pizza lunch, ordered Mom’s Pantry or purchased a raffle ticket has supported the P.A. Many heartfelt thanks to all of you!
Thanks and Farewell
Thanks to Miss Mandy Shewchuk for all of her efforts as a part time assistant in both the Pre-Kindergarten and After School programs. Miss Shewchuk has worked in the programs for the past 2 ½ years. Her warm, easy going demeanor and conscientious care for the students has been very much appreciated!
St. Emile School wishes Miss Shewchuk all the very best of future endeavours, including an upcoming career in the broadcasting industry! Thanks again for all of your help, Mandy!

Nicole Sums Up "We Day"
On November 23rd, the grades 5-8 classes took a field trip to the MTS Centre to celebrate “We Day”. Once there, we learned all about kids from around the world who wished they had the things we take for granted. “We Day” was filled with inspiring music and motivational speakers like Spencer West and Al Gore. It was an amazing day and made us want to help the less fortunate.

Dear St. Emile School Community,
Each and every Christmas we are grateful for the opportunity to have our students actively participate in the joy of giving! Over the years we have adopted several causes that are dear to our collective hearts.
#1 The ‘Warm and Fuzzy’ Christmas tree
In the early years’ hallway there is small “Charlie Brown” style Christmas tree we decorate for the children who attend Rossbrook House. Our tree is adorned with your gifts of new socks, mitts, gloves, toques, ear muffs/bands and socks. We want all Winnipeg children to feel warm and loved this holiday season.
#2 Christmas Hampers
Every year we make up bountiful hampers of food and gifts for families in need . A note has already gone home with specific requests for each grade level. Thank You for your generosity and support!
#3 The Grade 8 Garage Sale
On Friday December 9th, all our students had the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping for loved ones. They were helped by Santa’s Grade 8 Elves who assisted young shoppers with finding the perfect gift for someone special and making sure it is wrapped just right! Monies collected at the Garage Sale will be used for Holy Childhood and other ongoing endeavours. Our gift prices were the lowest in the city and ranged from $0.25 to $5.00.
#4 The Christmas Concert
This year we are presenting “The Greatest Christmas Gift Ever” . Performances will be at 10:00a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. All guests are encouraged to bring a food donation for our hampers or Winnipeg Harvest.
#5 Grade 8 Christmas Raffle
Tickets are going quickly for our annual Christmas Dinner Raffle. For just a dollar a ticket, you have the chance of winning Christmas Dinner for the family. The lucky winner will walk away with a $250 gift certificate from Sobey’s!!!!! Monies collected by the Grade 8’s will go to funding their year end trip.
Wishing you all the best Christmas ever!

Visitors to the School!
For the safety and well being of all students and staff working within St. Emile School, all visitors to the school during regular hours ( 8:30 a.m.– 3:30 p.m.) are expected to check into the school office, sign in and wear a visitor’s tag if proceeding into the main building or gym area. The restricted areas for school visitors during school hours are: classrooms, including the school gym, as well as the staff room.
Exceptions to this policy are parents and guardians who are volunteering in classrooms, the gym, or the Pre-Kindergarten area during school hours.
Our Parents’ Association (PA) has now developed a parent lounge area in the school canteen, which will include: a table area with comfortable seating and a coffee maker as well. The PA is looking into other ways to make this lounge area comfortable for visiting parents and guardians working in the school. For any suggestions in this regard, please contact Lorraine Mitchell from our PA.
Thanks in advance for everyone’s cooperation in this important matter.

Thanks for the Help!
St. Emile School thanks Miss Jodian Self for her part time volunteer teaching in the early years’ physical education program over the past two years (Kindergarten-Gr.3). Miss Self also volunteered her time and talent to organize several early years’ activity days for our students!
This past June , when the opportunity presented itself to the school to hire a part-time teacher for early years for grade one, French, and this particular physical education position, Miss Self’s volunteer teaching services were no longer required.
Our community has been truly blessed by Miss Self’s energy, enthusiasm and generosity! Thanks again for the valuable and much appreciated volunteering of her time and efforts at St. Emile School!

I Love to Run Month and IWALK Week
Once again, the entire school is participating in I Love to Run Month. At different times during the day, classes will jog their way into a healthier lifestyle (and to stay warm if the weather isn’t).
In addition, we are participating in IWALK Week from October 3rd through 7th, 2011 with IWALK Day on Wednesday, October 5th, 2011. The week provides students with the opportunity to actively commute to school for their health, the environment, their community and their parent’s pocketbooks! Walking to school is a great way to build physical activity into your day, burns no greenhouse gases, gets more people active in the community and costs nothing!
We will be among the thousands of Manitoba schoolchildren who will join millions of others from over 43 countries to celebrate walking to school this October!

St. Emile Parents’ Association News
Volunteer Opportunities! The Parents' Association has several positions available for you to volunteer in. To find out more about the following positions, please come to the first monthly PA meeting on Sept. 13, 2011. Till then, read on and see what position on the Parents’ Association would suit you.
Secretary- needed immediately (approximately 4 hours/month including monthly meeting on the second Tuesday of the month). Duties include taking minutes at the monthly meeting, monthly correspondence (minimal) and providing the office with information of the P.A's activities for the monthly newsletter. What a great way to know what’s going on in your child’s school!
St. Paul's Raffle Chairperson (October/November) The time required by the chairperson will be approximately 10 hours of time (total) plus an additional 12 hours with the other volunteers of the fundraiser. The more people involved the less time each person volunteers. So if you know of two or three people who are interested in doing this fundraiser please call. An information package for the raffle is available as is the assistance from all the P.A. members. This is a good money maker for the school!
Treasurer, January 2012. After many years of service Cassandra Ragbirsingh will be finishing her position of Treasurer. Cassandra is available to mentor the next Treasurer until June 2012 and would like to "hand over the reins" by January. The approximate time of volunteering for this position is 4 - 6 hours per month including the monthly P.A. meeting held on the second Tuesday September through June. The AGM is in October.
Mum's Pantry Chairperson, October. Mum's Pantry has been a fundraiser at St. Emile for many years and we would like to continue this. We are in need of a small team of people to distribute, collect and to submit the order forms to Mum's Pantry. The amount of time for this fundraiser is 10 to 12 hours. The more people involved the less volunteer time each person is needed for.
If you are interested in any of these positions, or if you are interested in working on the team for any of these fundraisers, please call Lorraine Mitchell at 256-8737. The executive of the P.A. will also be at the school daily and attending the St. Emile BBQ. You may approach any of us to speak about your volunteer opportunities.

NO CELL PHONES DURING SCHOOL HOURS!
While we recognize the communication and safety benefits of cell phones outside of school, students are reminded that cell phone use is not allowed on St. Emile School property during school hours. The potential disruptions and privacy violations caused by phone calls, texting or camera phone use during school hours warrants this policy.
Students who violate this policy will have their cell phone confiscated and returned only after their parents/guardians accompany them to the school office to claim it.

A VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS WITH CHILDREN HAVING HIGH RISK ALLERGIES:
Please make certain that if your child needs to carry an epi-pen that it is transported in a personal, labeled pouch at all times while at school, and that the epi-pen itself has not expired its date. St. Emile School participates in a national free medic alert ID Program. The office has more information for interested parents.
All parents/guardians sending bake sale items or classroom birthday cakes are reminded to avoid using peanuts of any kind. Everyone’s support of our “please avoid all nuts” policy is very much appreciated.

ST. EMILE SCHOOL PRIORITIES 2011-12
All Schools in the province of Manitoba are expected to set priorities (goals) for every new school year. These goals are part of the greater curriculum, instructional and program development for all of our students. Manitoba Education is the governing body for education in the province. They set priorities in the six categories listed here. All schools in the province, including St. Emile, base their school level priorities within these categories.
St. Emile’s priorities are initially developed by the school staff in consultation with our school board and Manitoba Education. Parent and guardian input is encouraged as these priorities help to support the greater overall development of our students.
1. Focus on design process and scientific inquiry components of the
K-8 science curriculum (i.e. teacher training, material resources support).
2. Continue the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programming for students and staff including:
- ICT needs to be teacher driven with an emphasis on meeting needs of students’ curricular outcomes.
- direct financial resources towards professional development and release time for teachers and library technician.
3. Continue to grow as a faith-based community and UNESCO Associated school through various activities and projects at the local, national and global level.
4. Implement a school-wide math assessment of students’ numeracy skills in grades 1-8.

Breakfast provides essential vitamins and minerals for healthy growth and development. Children who skip breakfast may not make up for missed nutrients later in the day.
Children who eat breakfast do better at school.
Eating breakfast is associated with improved memory skills, better test grades and greater school attendance rates. Children who miss breakfast may feel tired and hungry, and find it hard to concentrate.
Breakfast is linked to healthier body weights.
People who regularly eat breakfast have healthier body weights than those who skip breakfast.
Breakfast eaters have healthier lifestyle habits.
Children and adults who eat breakfast tend to make healthy food choices throughout the day and are more physically active than those who skip breakfast.
Eating breakfast can help kids learn how to eat well.
Breakfast is an ideal time to role model healthy eating for your children. It's easy to teach kids simple meal planning and preparation skills when you eat breakfast together. No Time? Try these time saving tips to help your family make time for breakfast:
-Make it a rule that all homework is done before bed.
