School Uniforms...

A school uniform fitting date has been chosen for Tuesday, June 14th from 3- 7:00 p.m.

How to Order the School Uniform

If anyone needs uniform pieces please go to www.topmarks.ca and enter our school code of EMI01. When you place an order online you will receive it in 3-4 business days. If you are unsure of what to order, you can call 1-800-667-7105 and ask for customer service. Any of the ladies at Top Marks will be glad to assist you.

Our Annual Bike-a-thon is Friday, June 17th

Bike-a-thon month is here! Due to the possibility of flooding this spring, the P.A. decided to move the Bike-a-thon to June instead of May as in previous years.  The P.A. may keep it in June if it works out well this year.  Hopefully, God will bless us with a beautiful dry, sunny day and you will all be wearing shorts, hats and sunscreen. Come out to support the children and join us for hot dogs, chips, bike riding and fun! If you have any questions or suggestions in regard to the Bike-a-thon, please contact Lorraine at 256-8737.

Thank you in advance to all the volunteers who are intending to come out to help with the Bike-a-thon.  There are many jobs, big and small, that need doing.  Come out and work on your tan, as you enjoy your task.

Manitoba Marathon 2011

Many students have been joining in the fun and fitness on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (8:00 a.m. start) as the weather improves.  St. Emile has registered for the MB. Marathon which is always on Fathers’ Day, June 19th.   Students who attend the morning fitness runs are not obliged to enter the Marathon unless they choose to do so.

We still have lots of lime green shoelaces to sell!   They are only $2.00 each and for a great cause. The money raised from the sale of these shoelaces, though supported by the MB Marathon, goes towards helping people who live with an intellectual disability.  In view of this good cause, wear your green shoelace with pride.  If you do not have one yet, just a twoonie will get you one from the office.

A message from The St. Emile Parents’ Association...

We are still in need of a PA Secretary

Our current secretary, Korenna Dunsford, will soon be leaving us.  This position does not take up that much of your time.  If you have been considering this position, just come to any one of our meetings during the year, and get more information.  We’d love to see you there!

2011 Graduation

The Gr. 8 Grad is being held on Thursday, June 23rd.  If you are the parent of a child in the school, but not in grade 8, we would enjoy sharing in your energy and ideas for this amazing event.  We need assistance prior to June 23rd and the day of the grad itself.  If you are interested in lending us a hand, please leave your name at the school office and someone will contact you.

Summer Reading and Writing

During your child’s summer vacation, it is important for him to spend time reading and writing on a regular basis whether he is a beginning reader or fluent reader. Luckily, summer’s more flexible schedule and wide array of activities lend themselves to literacy opportunities. Try some of these suggestions for making your school-aged child’s summer full of literacy fun.

-Be a reader and writer yourself. When you spend time reading books on the beach or directions for planting flowers, you demonstrate for your child that reading is both fun and useful.

-Set aside a consistent time each day for reading. Whatever time you choose, stick to it, but also remember that flexibility around trips and special family events is OK.

-Read aloud to your reader. As school-aged children become better readers, parents often stop reading aloud to them. However, by reading more difficult books aloud to your reader, you help him learn more vocabulary words, concepts and ways of telling stories and interpreting information.

-Allow your child to choose books for summer reading. It is important for him to read about topics that interest him, whether it is insects, dragons, or a favorite fiction series.

-Encourage your child not to limit summer reading to books. Encourage your child to read the sports page to check up on his favorite team or to read children’s magazines such as Ranger Rick, National Geographic World, and New Moon.

-Take books along on outings. Pack books in your beach bag or picnic basket, and bring a stack on long car rides. You and your child can enjoy books any where you go this summer.

-Read a book and watch the DVD together. When you finish reading and viewing, discuss the similarities and differences and talk about which version you prefer. Many books, including Stone Fox, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, and the Harry Potter series, are available in movie versions.

-Encourage your child to write this summer, too. From writing postcards to friends and relatives to keeping a journal while on a trip, summer presents unique ways for your child to write about his own experiences.

A Year in Grade 2

A busy, exciting year in Grade Two is coming to an end. I’ve had a wonderful time with this helpful, responsible and enthusiastic group of students. There was never a shortage of volunteers, no matter what the task! The class worked eagerly on all tasks I placed before them. They completed excellent researched animal projects and produced “master pieces” of Art.

We had an incredible, culturally enriched experience during our field trip to the Japanese Cultural Centre. Our last field trip takes us to the Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach, where we will experience pioneer life as it was. The final exciting event for our classroom will be the arrival of our chicks in mid-June and watching our tadpoles turn into frogs.

I would like to thank all the parents who have volunteered in any way in class and on outings. A grateful thank you to all parents who dedicated time to reading, studying for spelling, signing agendas, any home work and getting hot lunch orders in! Your help and support has been greatly appreciated.

I wish the Grade Two’s and their families and all St. Emile families a safe and exciting summer!

P.S. - The Grade Two fish are once again up for adoption! It is a first come, first serve basis with written parental permission.

Grade Two Teacher

MOVE IT DANCE

MOVE IT DANCE- is completing the 2010-11 school year with a recital at the Manitoba School for the Deaf on Pembina Hwy.  There will be a note home on this with more information.  They will perform at the MSD on Sunday, June 19th.  The tickets cost $10.00.

The program of MOVE IT DANCE will continue next September.  The program is open to grades’ 1 – 5.   If there is enough interest for the Kindergarten class, it is possible to set something up for them separately.

Thank you  for all the support throughout the year.

We hope you consider enrolling your children again next year.  Have a great summer!

Mrs. Jean Weselowski

Grade 4 Teacher

Your thoughts and prayers, please....

As summer approaches we ask our school community members to please keep in their thoughts and prayers those fellow community members with health challenges at this time, including:

Miss Ashlee Moquin – the daughter of Shelly and sister of DJ on our custodial team, who was recently hospitalized and is now recovering at home

Father Lucien Roy – retired Pastor of St. Emile Church, who continues his health recovery at Riverview Health Centre

Father Martin Bradbury – Director of Catholic Education for the Archdiocese of St. Boniface – who continues to receive  medical treatment in both Winnipeg and Rochester, MN

Mr. Denis Courteau – from our educational assistant team, who continues to recovery from recent medical treatment and awaits upcoming treatment in Calgary at the end of June.

Track and Field Season is Here!!

Congratulations to all of our Grade 7 & 8 students who participated in the annual Knights of Columbus MB Catholic Schools Athletic Association event held on Monday, June 6th, at the University of Manitoba.  Spirits were high, the sun was warm and the results were excellent!  A special thanks to Mr. R. Querel, the grade 7 & 8s, school staff and parent volunteers for all of their help.

The grade 4-6 students’ track & field meet will be held Tuesday, June 14th.  Please note that all meet results will be posted on our website.

Well done everyone!!

Plant pick-up!

Plant pick up will be in the school gym on Thursday, May 26, 2011, between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m.  This is the one time that the gym smells like the “Garden of Eden”!  Why not lend a hand organizing the orders and then you can take your plants home?  For just a few hours or all day will be very helpful!
A great gift idea is purchasing a plant card for a birthday or an anniversary (or for you of course). You can visit the greenhouse in person to choose your plants.  This can be done from May 6 to June 18th.

Great volunteering op!

A huge thank you from the Courteau Family

As many of you are aware, Denis Couteau was diagnosed with a very rare type of cancer in the fall of 2010.  The surgery and treatment could not be done here, so our family had to take up residence in Calgary for an extended period of time.
Denis’ current employer, St. Emile School, organized a very successful benefit social while we were away.  It assisted us with travel costs and living expenses not covered by MB. Health and Blue Cross.  On that note, we would like to extend our thanks to all of the W.P.S. members that looked after tickets sales for their division, purchased tickets and took time out of busy schedules to attend the event.  We were sorry we were not in town to attend.
We would like extend our thanks to Chief McCaskill and the executive of the W.P.S. for all their assistance over the past several months.
The executive of the Police Association also needs to be recognized for their help and kindness during a difficult time.

Thanks to everyone for their cards, e-mails, thoughts and good wishes - it made being out of the province a little easier to handle.

At this time we are back at home.  Denis is recuperating and gaining weight and stamina as he will have to undergo a second surgery in Alberta, likely in the late spring.  I am back at work in the QM’s stores.  I would like to extend big thanks to my co-workers who managed through a very busy time short-handed, due to my leave.
Once again our household is reminded how the W.P.S. organization really is our second family and there for us.

Sincerely,
Denis, Dawn and Kenneth Courteau

Staff Changes Now and For Next Year!

St. Emile School has a few staffing changes to share within our community now and into the upcoming 2011-2012 school year:

·       Mr. Anthony Fiorentino is transitioning well into the Grade 7 classroom after the recent retirement of Mrs. Cheryl Chartrand. Mr. Fiorentino has expressed that he has appreciated the support of the school staff, students and parents that he has been in contact with thus far! Mr. Fiorentino is familiar with St. Emile since he has substitute taught here on several occasions.

In sharing some background about Mr. Anthony Fiorentino . . . he was born and raised in Winnipeg with all of his early, middle and senior years schooling taking place in the Catholic system at both St. John Brebeuf and St. Paul’s High Schools. Mr. Fiorentino has been very active in Winnipeg’s Italian community including:  serving as the director of the Italian school located in the Caboto Italian Cultural Centre and serving on the board of directors of the Italian Chamber of Commerce and The Sons of Italy charitable fraternal order. Anthony’s interests include: playing indoor soccer, working out, and spending time with family and friends.

When asked what his initial impressions were of the St. Emile School community, Mr. Fiorentino’s comment was: “I’ve felt very welcomed! I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work in the Grade Seven classroom. I’m excited for what every day will bring!”

Welcome to St. Emile School, Mr. Fiorentino!  We blessed to have you in our community!!

·  Two more important upcoming staff changes that St. Emile School would also like to share with everyone for the 2011-2012 school year are:

-        Following the current two month term as the Grade 7 teacher, Mr. Fiorentino will become the Grade 5 term teacher for the 2011-2012 school year. Mrs. Donna Burdey will be away on her maternity leave from that classroom teaching position at that time.

-        Mlle Nicole Schilling will be the Grade 7 teacher for the 2011-2012 school year.  Mlle Schilling will continue to teacher French and assist with Information Communication Technology (ICT) classroom programming as well for the upcoming school year.

We’re looking forward to an exciting upcoming school year that includes these staff changes for 2011-2012!

If you have any questions please call Lorraine at 256-8737. Coffee and goodies will be served.

There are volunteering ops galore!!
 – A Volunteering Opportunity
Volunteers are very much appreciated.  And, we have noticed that they have a lot of fun when helping out in various areas of the school.  Every year, we fill out our children’s registration for the coming year.  The package contains a Volunteer Form that lists volunteering needs.  Don't wait until next year to get involved with volunteering! Check in the office and Suzanne will direct you to one of the many areas that need volunteers or speak to any of the many parents that you see volunteering and they will fill you in. Do not feel that you have to commit to several hours for the rest of the year. Often there is help needed for a onetime event (Shrove Tuesday, Learning Fair, kitchen renovation, field trips, vaccination day, etc) and only for an hour or two. So ask around and see what will fit with your schedule and get involved. Every parent who volunteers always enjoys themselves so come out and have some fun.

Get involved in your child’s school!

 Wanted:  Parents' Association Secretary

The P.A. is still in need of a Secretary.  Korenna Dunsford has stepped into this position for the balance of the year. However we will need someone to fill the position in September.   Korenna's youngest daughter, Moneca, is graduating from St. Emile in June, and sadly, she will move on.

Here are some of the requirements:

The time commitment is approximately 4 hours a month, attendance of the P.A. meeting on the second Tuesday of the month from September to June plus one to two executive meetings held each year. This is a position where there is much support by all the executive members of the P.A. so you are never left "high and dry".  Is this just perfect for you?  If you are interested in looking into this position please come to the next P.A. meeting on Tuesday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m.  We meet in the staff room and see how it goes or,

you can call Lorraine Mitchell at 256-8737.

FAREWELL TO A DEDICATED TEACHER, COLLEAGUE AND FRIEND

St. Emile School bids a fond farewell to Mrs. Cheryl Chartrand, who is retiring from her Grade 7 teaching position. Her final day at school will be Friday, April 29th, 2011.

Mrs. Cheryl Chartrand’s career in the education field has spanned four decades, including teaching in both Grade 5 and in Grade 7 at St. Emile for the past 18 years! Cheryl Chartrand’s desire to challenge her students academically while striving to enhance their character and faith formation

at the school has been a blessing to the hundreds of students who have had her as a teacher!

The many talents and interests of Cheryl Chartrand’s have most certainly enriched the daily learning experiences for our St. Emile students, including: her involvement with community service efforts at both St. Amant and Rossbrook House, organizing and coaching our very successful and popular Running Club, coordinating and overseeing an ever expanding school recycling program, and planning the annual camping trip for her Grade 7 class.

With the desire and opportunity to spend more time with her ever expanding family (including several grandchildren), as well as pursuing a new career path with the Continuing Professional Development Program at the U of MB Faculty of Medicine, Cheryl Chartrand must be commended for her dedicated service to the children and youth who have been touched by her nurturing and supportive nature as a teacher!

God bless you, Mrs. Chartrand, as you go forth into the next phase of your life! Thank you for everything that you’ve done!!

Manitoba Marathon!

The Running Club has completed another successful indoor track season.  Thank-you to all parents, relatives, and friends who turned up at Max Bell to cheer on the teams!
All students who wish to exercise for fun and fitness will be invited to train on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (8:00 a.m. start) once the weather improves.  St. Emile will also be entering students, parents, family, and friends who wish to participate in the 33rd Manitoba Marathon on June 19th.  Students who attend the morning fitness runs do not need to enter the Marathon unless they choose to do so.
As in past years, shoelaces will be sold for a twoonie to support the Marathon Jog in the Park, April 27th, for all students who train on a regular basis, and for all members of the indoor track team.

Coming Attractions:      Jog in the Park
Students are transported to Assiniboine Park by chartered bus.  The bus departs St. Emile at 9:00 a.m. and returns at 11:30.  Runners run/walk 2km and then are treated to music and a small snack.  It’s a fun way to encourage children to participate in track.
A number of teachers, parents, and support staff help with the supervision, along with selected volunteers from the grade 7 and 8 classes.

Physical Activity is GOOD Medicine.

If a doctor could prescribe one pill to control blood pressure and cholesterol, improve bone density and help prevent heart disease and stroke, that pill would be physical activity.

It’s easy to get involved:

1. Register by April 26, 2011.
2. Receive your registration package, containing a Physical  Activity booklet, a flying disc and more.
3. Be active as a family. Use the flying disc, walk the dog, play  tag, anything to get you off the couch and active as a family.
4. At the end of May, tell us how your family got active by submitting the “How our family got active form.”

Challenge yourself and your family to get active whenever and wherever you can during Physical Activity Month in May. Only 30 per cent of adults in Manitoba get the basic amount of activity required for health, and as few as 10 per cent of children and teens in this province get the amount of recommended physical activity.

ATHLETES IN ACTION!!!

ATHLETES IN ACTION summer sports camps are back at various gym sites in Winnipeg for 2011!

Students in Pre-K to gr. 8 will be receiving the annual AIA Summer Camp 2011 brochures which will be distributed to classrooms just prior to the Easter long weekend. For those students and their families who may not be familiar with AIA Camps, the basketball, volleyball and multi sport camps have operated in Manitoba for over 15 years! As their promotional pamphlet points out: “AIA Camps are the best environment for learning the essential skills, techniques and tactics of the respective sports, as well as encouraging the spiritual, physical and mental growth of each player!”

AIA Camps operate out of a variety of locations throughout Winnipeg during July and August for youth ages 5-18, with two specific camps in multi-sports (August 8–12th) and basketball (August 22-26th) being held at St. Emile School for students ages 9–15.

As in previous years, both of the AIA Camps at St. Emile are being offered at a reduced price to St. Emile students! While the regular price of the camps is a very good value, the reduced price for our students is outstanding! The regular price of the multi-sports camp (volleyball/dodge ball/soccer/basketball) is $130 ($90/St. Emile students) and the regular price of the basketball camp is $150 ($110/St. Emile students)!!

More information – including the registration form – can be found in the AIA Camp pamphlets when they come out! Interested students  and their families can check out the AIA website:                 athletesinaction. com for more information and early registration.

Because the camps fill quickly, interested families should register               soon to avoid disappointment!!

STUDENT DROP OFF/PICK UP PARKING LOT PROCEDURE

The “safety first” procedure for dropping off and picking up of students is as follows:

All vehicles are to enter  the parking lot off of Sterling Ave. (north entrance) and exit via St. Anne’s Rd. (east exit) only.

Also, when dropping off/picking up students, please do not park in the main thoroughfare as this causes traffic congestion.  If you need to wait, please park your vehicle in the main parking lot area.

It is of utmost importance for safety reasons that this procedure be followed.  Our appreciation to everyone who has been following this procedure!

NO CELL PHONES ARE TO BE USED DURING SCHOOL HOURS

While we recognize the communication and safety benefits of cell phones outside of school, students are reminded that cell phone use is not allowed on St. Emile School property during school hours. The potential disruptions and privacy violations caused by phone calls, texting or camera phone use during school hours warrants this policy.    Students who violate this policy will have their cell phone confiscated and returned only after their parents/guardians accompany them to the school office to claim it.

Parents Association Meeting

The P.A. meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 8th at 7:00 pm in the staff room. Everyone is welcome to attend and find out what is happening with the P.A. and our fundraising. There are some changes coming and you won't want to miss it! We'll be discussing the Plant Sale, Bike-a-thon and future fundraising ideas. If you want your ideas heard please come and join us. Shrove Tuesday (aka Pancake Day) March 8th, 12, noon

Thanks to the generosity of St. Emile Parish and Fr. R. McDougall, we are able to hold our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake luncheon. Since our own canteen is still closed, we will be able to use the Parish kitchen to cook up our pancakes.   They will still be served in the school gym.

This is where we could use your help!

If you have an electric griddle/pan and/or you are willing to come and cook pancakes please sign up!  There is a signup sheet in the foyer of the school. We are expecting to feed 225 to 250 people. We need lots of help flipping pancakes, stirring batter and serving pancakes with syrup to the students and families. It is always a laughter-filled day with lots of coffee and friends. Shrove Tuesday is always followed by Ash Wednesday.  Some folk use the New Year to make resolutions to better their lives, others wait for the start of Lent.  Lent begins March 9th.  You are all invited to come to the Church for Ash Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m.

Wanted: PARENTS ASSOCIATION SECRETARY!

The P.A. is in need of a Secretary.  Korenna Dunsford has stepped into this position for the balance of the year. However we will need someone to fill the position in September.   Korenna's youngest daughter, Moneca, is graduating from St. Emile in June, and sadly, she will move on.

Here are some of the requirements:  the time commitment is approximately 4 hours a month, attendance of the P.A. meeting on the second Tuesday of the month from September to June plus one to two executive meetings held each year. This is a position where there is much support by all the executive members of the P.A. so you are never left "high and dry".  Is this just perfect for you?  If you are interested in looking into this position please come to the next P.A. meeting on Tuesday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m.  We meet in the staff room and see how it goes or, you can call Lorraine Mitchell at 256-8737.

So...change the date on your calendar, change that vacation day at work and join us on Friday, June 17th at St. Vital Park for hot dogs, chips, bike riding and fun! February is Reading Month!

With February being READING MONTH, here are a few “tips” that parents and guardians may find helpful to promote reading with their children!

·  Read aloud at least 15 minutes a day with your child.

·  Establish a routine time and place to read to your child. Bedtime is always a popular time, but pick other times of the day when you can.

·  Obtain library cards for yourself and your children.

·  Make a special place in your home where your child can read and write.

·  Show your child how you read every day for fun and work.

·  Talk to your children about their experiences.

·  Talk about the book that you are reading with your child, or if they are older, the book that they’re reading themselves. Help him or her to make connections.

·  Talk about how you use reading every day.

Take Steps to Reduce Your Sodium Intake...

Many families are not aware that they can cook quick, nutritious meals at home, and instead turn to store bought, processed meals, which are often high in sodium.

Our bodies need a certain amount of sodium (salt is made up of sodium) in order to stay healthy.

However, most people get far more sodium than they need, which is a direct result of the processed foods that have become so commonplace.  In fact, experts say that only about 10 per cent of our sodium intake comes from the salt we cook with and use during meals, and nearly 80 per cent comes from processed and restaurant foods .  While taking the salt shaker off the table is a good start, it is also necessary to limit the amount of processed foods you eat.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba recommends that Canadians consume 2,300 mg or less of sodium per day, which is approximately one teaspoon of salt or less.

Ready‐made lunch packages, processed meats, and fast food are high in sodium, and generally have little nutritional value.

“Many ready‐made lunches are convenient, but not very nutritious,” says Christine Houde, Nutrition Manager at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.  “It’s better to buy your own containers, and make your own lunches.”

Here are some ways you can reduce sodium in your diet:

· Try to choose sandwich meats that are lower in sodium. Salami, pepperoni and bologna tend to be high in sodium, so choose lower sodium alternatives whenever possible.  Some examples are roast turkey, chicken or lean roast beef.

· Grill slices of boneless, skinless chicken once a week for sandwiches, pitas or tortillas.

· Try “batch cooking”, by doubling a recipe and freezing the leftovers for an easy meal later on.

·  Make mealtime a family affair. If everyone pitches in, it will be easy, fun and a good way to teach kids healthy eating and bond as a family.

· Purchase pre‐cut vegetables to save time.

· Use healthier fats, such as canola oil, herbs for flavouring instead of salt, add more fibre whenever possible and decrease the amount of sugar used in recipes.

· Include a regular thermos meal. Prepare extra food for dinner, and then put it in a thermos for tomorrow’s lunch. Try a low‐sodium stir fry with lots of vegetables, or a low‐sodium soup and crackers with unsalted tops.

· Choose healthy snacks to help keep energy levels up, such as fruits, vegetables with dip or a yogurt parfait.

Including too much sodium in your diet can eventually lead to high blood pressure, which puts you at a higher risk for heart disease or stroke.

Contest Winner Acknowledged

There was a contest in the last newsletter for students only.  It asked for any student to give their interpretation of January’s Newsletter’s logo.  There were some excellent entries.

The winning entry is as follows:

“The logo shows a mother bird caring for her little ones, ready to protect them from harm.  The little birds can be like the students of St. Emile.  As they grow in St. Emile, they are guided and taught the spirit of kindness and respect, until they are ready to face more challenges.  Since St. Emile is also a part of a bigger community, the little birds can also represent the needy.   The charity works of St. Emile provides help to others.  In this case, the picture of the mother bird and her little ones represent the spirit of giving and generosity.”

This endearing entry was written by Danielle Mendoza in grade 5. The runners’ up are:
Joseph Pascucci, Angela Bullee and Karolina Fisher. It was so much fun reading your interpretations! Boys and girls, look for another opportunity to participate in this contest in upcoming newsletters. Good job everyone!
